The latest movements of our Bearded Vultures: Jeremia, Springbok, Pharaoh, InkosiYeentaka, Lehlwa, Mac, Kloutjie, Camo and Mollie and our Cape Vulture Bennie for the week 20-27 June 2016,that are fitted with satellite transmitters and included in our monitoring program.

Jeremia flew to Newcastle for the day earlier in the week and Kloutjie was seen visiting Giants Castle feeding site this weekend.  Meet the vultures included in the project

Conservation Letters – African Vultures Collapsing towards Extinction

Vulture populations globally are collapsing. In Africa, populations of eight species have declined by an average of 62% over the last 30 years; seven have declined by an average of 80% or more, and six species have been up-listed to Critically Endangered. Of the threats facing them, 90% of reported deaths are due to poisoning and the traditional medicine trade.

Bearded Vulture NestCam

The first photos of the season of our nest with cameras in. Thanks to funds provided by Marriott, the equipment has been upgraded at the site and a second camera has been added to the alternate nest that is on the same cliff face. As at 27 May 2016 there is no sign that eggs have been laid yet, although the birds have been seen in the area. Lets hold thumbs that one of the nests are used this year!
